i'm back! some things are worth saving and i've had requests from all over to continue as previously promised. the recent u.s. department of justice megaupload bust also compelled me to keep up the good fight... too many of my favorite music and film blogs have now been hobbled by the entertainment industry's draconian tactics. all that fantastic music/film/art gone in one fell swoop.

most of my links here are hosted through mediafire, but for some files that exceeded the 200 mb limit that mf set, i used megaupload. as most of you are now aware, the u.s. justice department has taken down megaupload, and arrested 7 people at it's facilities in new zealand.

in light of all this, i'm reposting the links i had though megaupload via another file host. if any links are down, please bring it to my attention and i will re-upload. i know that this blog is now kinda m.i.a., but i do intend on the occasional post when i get the time.

watch this video, read up on sopa/pipa and just remember: we defeated them this time around, but the lobbyists for the entertainment industry will not let this die.... do you think that the takedown of megaupload the day after sopa getting defeated was just some coincidence? how much great music and art was lost in one fell swoop?

a little bit of a departure here from the usual album post, though still music-related... esp for any throbbing gristle/chris and cosey fans.

sexangle is a "blue movie" starring none other than Cosey Fanni Tutti. produced by the infamous [john lindsay] under the pseudonym of Karl Ordinez, this was one of the many endeavors in the adult industry that cosey used as both financing for Coum Transmissions and eventual fodder for the [Prostitution exhibition] at the ICA in 1976.

be forewarned, this is an real 70's porno film (grainy vhs-to-dvd transfer and all), and one of the more interesting artifacts of the entire tg legacy... you'll see cosey up close and personal and if you have any qualms about such things, just move on.

on a related note, [chronditic sound] recently released the soundtrack to this on cassette in an edition of 50.

another post here that was temporarily waylayed by the great laptop meltdown of 2011. one of my fave albs of 2010, tom darksmith takes a subtler, musique concrète-esque hypnotic tack to the well-beaten noise horse. released on the all-mighty [hanson records] in an edition of 300. the first 30 came with a bonus 3" cdr which i'm including here.

as another bonus for my discerning readers, i'm also posting two earlier cdrs, landslide (2008) self-released on [mom costume] and weightless (2007) on [chondritic sound].

sorry for the delay in updating this thing, but i recently lost my laptop due to catastrophic hard drive failure and motherboard problems. luckily, i was able to get an awsm new replacement immediately... unfortunately, i lost all the bookmarks and cover art i had saved for my next 5 posts.

i used to love digging in bins of crappy 50 cent and dollar records for gems, but as the years have passed, i've lost my patience for it... grubby fingers, seeing the same shitty records over and over, my allergies flaring up from all the dust... yuck. in the past few months i've slowly started to enjoy the process again, and this record i recently found makes all the grainy fingertips and sneezing worth it.

karel kryl was an exiled czech protest singer who is a legend in his home country. no point rehashing his bio here... you can read about his storied life before and after feeling the communist regime in 1969 [here] or at the comprehensive [official website]. his discography is rather large and if you dig this, i suggest checking out his other records... you won't be disappointed.

The Drake equation is a complicated and speculative piece of mathematical fiddling that uses galactic probability to find how many alien civilizations are in the Milky Way. A similar equation might be needed to explain the highly improbable, shoot-the-moon-serendipity which produced The Korean Black Eyes: a killer early 70's all-girl garage soul, rock and roll Cryptozoological fable now proven by Plus Tapes’ bubblegum-pink reissue.

The Black Eyes really cook- covering Sly Stone, a little Elvis, and weirdly, The Moody Blues and a selection from “Jesus Christ Superstar.” They also are perplexing. How popular were they? Was there a soul/funk scene in 1970’s Korea, or were they going it alone? Does the singer know English or is she belting it out phonetic-style? (I’ve listened to this tape dozens of times and still can’t make up my mind. One song has a typical R&B monologue that’s nearly impossible to understand.) What became of them and how were these songs located 30+ years after the fact? Who knows?

But the music tells me I’m asking too many questions. The band is decent but clearly not session vets. You can hear the frequent temporal arrhythmia and the bass plodding to the root belatedly. The guitars are decent; the organ, barely audible. What they do have is undeniable energy and heart backing a fantastic lead vocalist who sings the daughter James Brown and Janis Joplin never had- a daughter who grew up in Soul, or in this case Seoul, South Korea. Her vocals are great: passionate, enticing, raw, and filled with arc-welding screams. And the accent is awesome-the keystone to the whole tape, a shining example of the inadvertent innovations found in cultural discourse.

Alvarius B.- Baroque Primitiva LP

By my count, Baroque Primitiva is the sixth album cut by Alvarius B. and is, like its predecessors, a deep swim through mysterious waters. The 11 tracks here were recorded at various sessions over the course of several years and range from "Humor Police" [a track that imagines what Syd Barrett might have sounded like had he been a devotee of rembetika] to a trippily Beatles-damaged version of 'You Only Live Twice' [the sole surviving shard of the aborted Alvarius B. Plays The Bond Songbook project]. Baroque Primitiva is the first long-format telegram from Alvarius B. since he lost his mothership [the Sun City Girls, with whom he employed his slave name, Alan Bishop] and it also feels like his most consistently non-acerbic -- perhaps even most beauty-oriented -- work. The songs often have a meditative pace and are filled with gorgeous lo-fi blends of vocals, guitar, bass and keys. Eyvind Kang guests on several tracks, but the bulk of the material was broadcast direct from the naked soul of Alvarius B., which turns out to be a warmer, sweeter place than you might imagine. The record also marks the return of the equally-legendary Poon Village label, whose productions are always extraordinary in visual terms, and Baroque Primitiva is no exception. The cover's meditative human mandala is a brilliant ocular ode to shifting visions of feminine pulchritude, and is worthy of the best framing job you can afford.

Back in the day, non-musicians mailed in their addled and/or eloquent poetry (often scribbled on sandwich bags or cocktail napkins), and for a small fee, a song was created out their poetic detritus. The concept is nothing new - there have been numerous anthologies of song poems (and even a film about the phenomenon), so many in fact that you have to wonder just how much good material there is. These collections answer that questions - tons of it, especially if you keep an open mind and you're as receptive to the strangeness of the genre as you are to the pained emotion and the historical insight they often provide.

i present to you the long oop print volumes 2-4 of the msr madness series compiled by Tom Ardolino (nrbq) and Don Bolles (Germs). much ink has already been spilled over the song-poem phenom and it's shining star Rodd Keith (including a documentary), but these collections were the first exposure many of us had to this treasure trove of american weirdness at it's finest.

phew should need no [introduction] as a legendary and prominent mover in the japanese underground scene for over three decades...

her first solo album from 1981 is an absolutely stunning krautrock/japanese-avant hybrid, recorded at Conny Plank's studio with Conny, Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit acting as co-producers and her backing band... credentials like that, you know you can't go wrong.

the aunt sally album was recorded and released in 1979 in an edition of 400, reissued in 1984 and again in 2002 w/ three live bonus tracks recorded in osaka in 1979 tacked on for good measure... a pleasant slice of kleenex/liliput-esque punk/post-punk, just hinting at the greatness to come two years later.

stellar midwest post-punk on a def eno/devoto/ubu trip that finally got the proper deluxe re-ish treatment earlier this year...

Raymilland formed in the summer of 1978 in St. Louis and lasted until the fall of 1981. Although starting out playing standard punk covers by the Buzzcocks, Damned, and Ultravox, their original influences and ideas about music leaned more toward the no-wave bands of NY and the more experimental bands from the UK. Raymilland played live eight times; four in St. Louis and four in Chicago. A fifth Chicago date slotted to open for Joy Division never happened when the US tour was canceled due to the death of Ian Curtis. Raymilland released one single in 1980 on Praxis (an influential Chicago music/art magazine), had one song included on the first Sub-Pop compilation cassette, and another on a compilation cassette released by the legendary Dong Dong Tapes from the Netherlands. A self produced demo cassette to attract label interest and procure live gigs was so influential that Wax Trax Records sold bootleg copies in their Chicago retail store.

Total WTF record from Nigeria. One copy dug up in 2008 & went for about 800 smackers. Furry, backasswards fuzz guitar, drums sometimes mixed way too high [likely under the influence of late 70s disco 12 inches]. There's also a couple of ballads with shaky, fragile femme vocals, but the backing continues to be slathered in wah & effects. As to why the guy on the front has fangs & bats flying around his head? Uh, you got me, buddy. Fans of Chrissy Zebby Tembo, you've found your next stop.

One of the great pleasures Satyajit Ray's films gives audiences is the beautiful music they contain. This has been true from the very beginning of his career, when he asked classical music Pandit Ravi Shankar (the 'Apu' trilogy, 'Devi') and Ustad Vilayat Khan ('The Music Room') to compose and perform the music for his soundtracks. These great maestros always worked within the framework of Indian classical music; that is, music based upon ragas. However, light classical and folk songs, as well as folk tunes, were also drawn upon and provide much intoxicating rhythm and lively orchestration for Ray's scores. ...

For the orchestration he himself wrote, he relied on the rich sonorities available in Western instruments played in combination with Indian ones -- for instance, violins and cello, trumpet and harmonium, played with Indian wooden flutes, sarangi, santoor, sarod, sitar and tabla. They lived in this old person’s home – well, it was more like a basement that stored old people. And they had this uniform which was these black turtlenecks and white nursing shoes. Usually they would fornicate in the alleyways behind these strip malls and peep into people’s windows. It always made an impression on me, so I decided to make a film that was loosely based on these memories.

William Onyeabor studied cinematography in Russia for many years, returning to Nigeria in the mid-70s to start his own Wilfilms music label and to set up a music and film production studio. He recorded a number of hit songs in Nigeria during the 70s, the biggest of which was "Atomic Bomb" in 1978. William has now been crowned a High Chief in Enugu, where he lives today as a successful businessman working on government contracts and running his own flour mill.

i'd like to personally thank nate from die monitr batss for turning me on to this the other evening at tube and [mutant sounds] for the tuneage and blurb...

compiling the "Slights Unspoken" LP and the "State/A Secret West" 7", plus some bonus. Voigt/465 were an Australian post punk band. Their sound is an interesting schizophrenic mix of punk, krautrock, psychedelia with RIO/Homosexuals/This Heat weirdness. Reminds me much of Family Fodder and Ludus. Overall, a big part in the history of Australian underground. Released in 2001 and sadly out of print nowadays.

a few weeks ago, i posted a bunch of obscure [ludus tracks] on this here thang. well, an astute reader notified me that i was short one release that i wasn't hepped to, a *very* ltd live cassette only release that came out on the [quick stab productions] tape label outta bristol/cardiff across the pond in the u.k.

i promptly contacted rob from the label and this was his response to my queries about said tape:

I'm in communication with Ian Devine - see if he says ok. Should be fine - the tape was freely available back in the 80s, even if only about 10 copies got made. He will advise on any problems re Linder but again i doubt it.
I'm hoping to make available all the Quick Stab Catalogue in time, through myspace and soundcloud.
The recording is actually one long improvisation, done privately during a practice/recording session.
I'll let you know. Have passed yr blogspot details on to Ian.

ludus... the strays

if you know me at all, you know that i'm a [ludus/linder sterling] obsessive. excepting the pickpocket cassette, i have almost every original ludus release (and believe me, they ain't cheap!), i've screen printed my own ludus shirts, i have the [linder works book] and [what linder saw]... i would give my left testicle to have one of those [linder sterling x richard nicoll t-shirts] and a copy of the infamous hacienda gig on dvd.

when ltm did their amazing [ludus re-ish campaign] in the early naughts, they claimed that they were presenting the entire ludus discography, but they were missing a few key components. tracks from the [meridians 1 cassette] and the [1982 peel session] were conspicuously asbsent. the peel sesh was omitted due to budget constraints, but who knows why the other tracks were omitted from the three main cds... a coupla leftovers did however turn up on the [Auteur Labels: New Hormones 1977-1982 cd] and the [black music] comp cds.

well, here's the rest of the story... in one convenient file, i have all of the disparate tracks rounded up for you. sadly, the last track ("wrapped in silence") on the peel session cuts off early and the quality on "corpse candle" from the meridians tape is a bit hissy, but the chances of this stuff ever seeing the light of day is about as likely as the factory menstrual egg timer ever being put into production.

in the spirit of vitriol and allegorical deaths, i'm bringing you [pussy galore]'s track-by-track deconstruction of the stones' finest hunk of wax, [exile on main st.]. released in 1986 on the heels of the [feel good about your body 7"], this was pg's response to sonic youth's threat to cover the entire "white album". only released in an edition of 550 cassettes, it's been booted on both vinyl (minus tracks) and cd. four tracks ended up on the woefully oop and essential [corpse love] cd from 1992.
